Dr Penka Ganeva

Dr Penka Ganeva graduated from the Medical University of Sofia in 1982. She obtained a specialty in Internal Medicine at the Medical Academy – Sofia in 1987, and a specialty in Hematology in 1989.

After two years of mandatory practice at the Internal Medicine Department of the District Hospital in Pirdop, in 1985 she joined the team of the Hаematology Clinic at the Specialized Hospital for Active Treatment of Hаematological Diseases (SBALHZ), then known as the National Center of Hаematology and Transfusion Medicine (NCHT).

She completed several specializations in France, Israel, and Spain. Since the establishment of the Hаematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Unit at SBALHZ in 2004, she has been part of its medical team, where she worked until December 2024.

Until 2020, Dr Ganeva taught hаematology seminars for medical students and residents in hematology and lectured in postgraduate qualification courses in the field of hаematology.

She is a regular participant and lecturer at national and international forums in her specialty and has presented at numerous hаematology congresses.

She is the author and co-author of multiple publications in Bulgarian and international journals in the field of hаematology.

Dr Ganeva has served as a principal investigator and sub-investigator in numerous Phase II, Phase III, and Phase IV clinical trials and has held a GCP (Good Clinical Practice) certificate since 2000.

Her professional interests are focused on hаematological disorders – she performs diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the blood and hаematopoietic organs (anemias, thrombocytopenias, leukopenias, leukemias, lymphoproliferative and myeloproliferative disorders, and coagulation abnormalities). She has a particular interest in hаematological problems during pregnancy. With over 20 years of experience in a stem cell transplantation unit, she has extensive expertise in defining transplantation indications, managing and monitoring patients after allogeneic SCT, and treating viral and bacterial complications in hаematological diseases.

Dr Ganeva is a member of the Bulgarian Medical Association of Hematology, the European Hаematology Association (EHA), and the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT).
