Dr Vesselin Lyutskanov, MD

Dr Lyutskanov, MD graduated from the Medical Academy – Sofia in 1986 and started working as a regimental doctor and then head of the surgical outpatient office at the headquarter of the construction corps. He specialized in surgery at the Pirogov Institute and the Military Medical Academy for the period 1986-1991.

 

From 1992 to 2007 he held a position from assistant in surgery to chief assistant at the Surgical Clinic of the Medical Institute – Ministry of Internal Affairs.

 

Since 1994 he has been actively researching the problem of diagnosis, treatment, follow-up and results of treatment of patients with abdominal hernia. He has accumulated experience from treating and monitoring thousands of patients with abdominal hernia. Thus, in 2005 he defended his PhD thesis on “Inguinal hernias – optimization of surgical treatment” with the scientific supervisor Assoc. Prof. G. Kondarev. The study volume was 1200 patients. Since 1995 he has been a surgeon at Vita Hospital and in 2005 he founded, developed and managed the surgical department there, laying the foundations of minimally invasive (laparoscopic) surgery. Dr. Lyutskanov established and managed the first specialized hernia treatment center – Vita Hernia Center.

 

For the period 2005-2009 he performed hundreds of hernioplasties in one-day surgery with excellent results, fast recovery and high patient satisfaction.

Since November 2009 he is in the team of the newly formed Department of Minimally Invasive and Laparoscopic Surgery of “Tokuda Hospital Sofia” headed by Prof. Vladimir Dimov.

In January 2015, he co-founded the Department of Surgery at “Sveti Ivan Rilski” Hospital. In August of the same year he took over its management.

Since 2017, he has been a surgeon at the University Hospital “Pirogov” and the head of the “Operating Theatre Unit”.

 

His professional interests are in the field of herniology and laparoscopic (minimally invasive) surgery.

Dr Lyutskanov, MD is a member of the Bulgarian Medical Association and the Bulgarian Surgical Society. He has authored and co-authored more than 50 publications and reports in scientific periodicals and surgical forums.
