Prof. Zlatko Kalvachev, Doctor of Medical Science

Prof.  Zlatko Kalvachev, PhD, is a graduate in medicine from Sofia Medical University in 1980. From 1983 to 1986, he was a regular doctoral student in virology at the Military Medical Academy, where he successfully defended his doctoral thesis. From 1994 to 2001, he worked as a virologist at the Institute for Scientific Research in Caracas, Venezuela, and headed the Laboratory of Virology.

 

In 2002, he joined the National Centre of Infectious and Parasitic Diseases (CNIPD) as head of the Laboratory of Molecular Virology. He was elected Associate Professor in 2003, defended his second PhD thesis (Doctor of Medical Sciences) in 2006 and was elected Professor in 2009. In 2011, he started working again at the Military Medical Academy, as the head of the Centre for Diagnostics and Analysis of Viruses and Virologies. In 2015 – 2016, he was the head of the Laboratory of Clinical Microbiology and Virology at SofiaMed University Hospital. Since 2016 he has been the head of the Virology Laboratory at Nadezhda Hospital.

 

His professional interests are in the field of rapid viral and rickettsial diagnostics; pathogenesis of diseases caused by viruses and rickettsiae; antiviral therapy; new viruses, etc. He has recognized degrees in Virology and Microbiology. He has a special interest in the topics “viruses and cancer”, “viruses and organ transplantation” and “viruses and reproductive health”. He has specialized in Russia, Finland, India, USA, etc.

 

He is the author of more than 200 scientific publications, 4 inventions, 15 rationalizations, as well as 10 monographs and scientific manuals. Scientific supervisor and/or advisor of 12 PhD students in virology; scientific supervisor of 17 graduate students in virology.

 

He is a member of the Bulgarian Medical Association, the Scientific Society of Doctors Virologists in Bulgaria, the International Research Foundation Hasumi – Bulgaria.
