GESEA Diploma Centre

In early June 2026, the Nadezhda Hospital Training Centre successfully passed an audit conducted by experts from the European Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy (ESGE) and was awarded the highest level of accreditation within the GESEA programme — Diploma Centre status. This means the centre is now authorised to conduct official GESEA examinations and certify physicians in minimally invasive gynaecological surgery.
This achievement is the result of the dedicated work of the entire team, led by Dr. Georgi Stamenov, Director of the Centre, and Dr. Iliana Buteva-Hristova, GESEA Chief Mentor. It reflects the hospital’s long-term commitment to delivering education that meets the highest European standards.
The GESEA (Gynaecological Endoscopic Surgical Education and Assessment) programme, developed under the auspices of ESGE, is an internationally recognised system for education and certification in gynaecological endoscopy, covering both laparoscopy and hysteroscopy. Its purpose is to standardise the theoretical knowledge and practical skills of specialists in the field.
Since July 2025, Nadezhda Hospital has been accredited by the European Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy (ESGE) as an official GESEA Training Centre. We have been developing the program since 2023, and the official ESGE audit confirmed that our training fully complies with the Academy’s highest educational standards.
The GESEA training program in gynaecological endoscopy is intended for physicians currently specializing in or already certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology, General Surgery, or Urology, as well as for medical students with an interest in surgical disciplines.
The program combines theoretical lectures, hands-on simulator training, and clinical case discussions supported by surgical videos. The practical component consists of three dedicated GESEA modules:
- HYSTT – Hysteroscopy Training and Testing;
- LASTT – Laparoscopic Skills Training and Testing;
- SUTT – Laparoscopic Suturing Training and Testing.
All practical sessions are conducted using officially validated GESEA training simulators.
About the Training
- Training is delivered in small groups of up to eight participants and is designed to develop essential practical skills, including:
- Hysteroscopic navigation within the uterine cavity and instrument handling;
- Fundamental psychomotor skills, including camera navigation, camera–instrument coordination, and bimanual laparoscopic coordination;
- Laparoscopic needle-holder handling and intracorporeal knot-tying techniques.
These are fundamental competencies in endoscopic surgery and provide an excellent foundation for physicians preparing for the ESGE Level 1 and Level 2 certification examinations.
The courses also form part of the official training pathway leading to the internationally recognized GESEA Diploma. Upon completion of the course, participants are eligible to sit the official GESEA examination at a certified examination centre of their choice.
Each participant receives a Certificate of Completion jointly issued by Nadezhda Hospital and GESEA.

Dr. Iliana Hristova is one of the few specialists in Europe certified as a GESEA Chief Mentor. She has extensive experience in endoscopic surgery and in delivering GESEA training programs and conducting official GESEA examinations.
